On a personal level, not being a member of the group mentioned above, I was very disappointed with this book. Not because it was poorly written or anything like that, it just didn't click with my taste. I wanted insight on the issues, not what Obama was eating for breakfast on a particular morning. I became overwhelmed at the sheer volume of detailed information that was being presented about the politicians. It was so painful that it became like watching a very bad documentary with no music and content to speak of. And when borderline interesting content did arise, it quickly faded into another morning of coffee and danishes in the middle room of the campaigns hotel suite with plenty of aides and officials on the side.
To make matters worse, the entire nation had just been bombarded with the 2008 election for 3 years in a row.... There is no way anyone could have read this book cover to cover in one sitting like most Harry Potter fans do with their beloved books. If someone attempted that, they might die of suffocation, that is, the book is pretty thick.... pun intended. It was like beating a dead horse with a stick, just completely unnecessary on all levels. All jokes aside I would honesty say if you are interested in the candidates, stick to news articles online. Its free, there are no adds, and it doesn't weigh a 2 and a half pounds in your back pack for the better part of a trimester.
The very few things about Game Change that interested me included and in fact is limited to the front cover, the back cover, the cuss words, and the inspiration the book gave me at times to drink hot coco and eat donuts. For example, on the inside jacket of the book, Obama is quoted to have said " this shit would be really interesting if we weren't in the middle of it" I suppose insight like that is pretty interesting. I mean, all we get of politicians are readings of the polish versions of the speeches that their staff cooks up for them. Perhaps for a reason, they might end up just saying something like what was quoted above.
At the end of the day Game Change was just bad. Its focus was wrong, the timing was wrong, and the book was really long. It was a chore to read and as stated earlier, it held my attention like a soap opera would. It is food for the people who play the beltway game, and a weight for those who thought they wanted to play. Do not be deceived by this book as I was. If you are going to read a political book, at least read something outrageous like perhaps something from Glenn Beck.At least you will get a laugh out of it.
